Woodpecker Flute
The
JTH Signature Series Traditional Woodpecker Flute
The
JTH Signature Series Traditional Woodpecker Flute is a Limited Edition
specialty design. Only 28 (that's right, just 28) of these incredible
flutes will
ever be made. For centuries, Lakota people often crafted their
flutes with a
woodpecker carved into the end of them. You see, it was the
woodpecker
who, in ancient times, knocked the holes in the old dead cedar branch
that
became the first Lakota flute. And so, to carve the head of a
woodpecker
into your flute was to show respect and honor to this winged relative
for
having revealed this wonderful instrument of healing, peace and love.
John Two-Hawks wanted to honor
this old way with a Signature Flute that
would so closely embody the
essence, beauty and style of a Lakota flute of
old, that it would transport you
to another time. The result is an amazing flute
that, while bearing some
contemporary features, looks, feels and sounds like
a traditional Lakota Woodpecker
Flute from centuries ago. To hold it in your
hands and hear it's ancient voice
takes you to the place from which it came.
This Special Limited Edition JTH
Signature Series Woodpecker Flute
features the hand-carved and
hand-painted head of a woodpecker
on the end. The decorative
rings are created by wood-burning, an
old traditional method. The
playing holes are also burned in, as they
would have been in ancient
times. This creates natural markings and
a wonderful scent that rises from
the flute whenever it is played. The
'bird', or block, is made of cedar,
and beneath it is a brass sleeve to
lift it and direct breath
flow. This brass sleeve is traditional as well,
believe it or not, as Lakota people
were trading for brass as far back
as the early 15th century. The
flute itself is made of poplar, and is
tuned to the haunting key of
G. Again, only 28 will ever be made.
